30 June 2016

The last sitting of the 30th YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament was today.

Congratulations to all of the young delegates who spent the week debating and discussing important state issues.

Youth Parliament is a very important program that gives young people the opportunity to have their views heard on issues important to them. The program has had many achievements over the years, including the introduction of ground-breaking legislation such as drug testing for drivers and mandatory use of bike helmets. Some of the issues discussed this year included access to mental healthcare, public transport concessions, legalising marijuana and the introduction of mandatory drug testing at music festivals.

Of the 120 who participated in this year's program, 5 teams came from my electorate: Mooney Valley City Council, Hoppers Crossing SC, Hobsons Bay City Council, Overnewton Anglican and Westbourne Grammar.
Having enjoyed the privilege of chairing two sessions on Monday and Tuesday, it is always good to see our youngsters get more involved with state politics.

I wish the participants all the best and thank them for making such a positive contribution to the Victorian community.
